Jorginho’s contract with Arsenal was initially due to expire today, June 30th, but Flamengo and the player himself made a considerable effort to get his transfer done early to allow him to play at the Club World Cup this month.

On Sunday, Flamengo were eliminated from the competition by Bayern Munich, but fans of the Brazilian club will surely agree it was worth the hassle to get Jorginho in from the start.

In the group stage, Jorginho provided assists against Esperance and LAFC, also playing 90 minutes in a 3-1 win over former club Chelsea. Those results earned Flamengo top spot in Group D, and they were somewhat unfortunate to end up against Bayern Munich in the last-16.

Bayern had faltered and lost 1-0 to Benfica in their final group game to finish as runners-up, making them one of the strongest runners-up Flamengo could have faced in the competition.

Though beating Bayern proved a step too far, Jorginho added to his goal contributions by netting a penalty in the 4-2 defeat.

The 33-year-old will now turn his attentions to Flamengo’s domestic campaign, with games coming up throughout July.

It’s good to see he’s made such a strong start with his new club, even if a bit of bad luck in the draw ultimately handed them an earlier end to the Club World Cup than they would have hoped for.
