Former director of football Paulo Pelaipe was sacked by Flamengo on Monday via e-mail, which is a sure-fire sign of the current tension that’s being felt in the Flamengo boardroom.
The departure reopens the political war in the club, which had a temporary truce since the departure of Abel Braga and the arrival of Jorge Jesus.
At the end of last year, Pelaipe agreed to expand his contract with vice-president and close friend Marcos Braz, who ordered his extension to be drafted by the club’s legal department.
When the agreement reached president and CEO Reinaldo Belotti to be signed, it did not go forward. Braz was not even consulted about the dismissal at first.
Pelaipe was reportedly advised by Marcos Braz not to tell details of what happened to the press and broke his silence on Tuesday regarding the matter.
“After a full season at CR Flamengo, I want to address President Rodolfo Landim, Vice President Marcos Braz, Executive Director Bruno Spindel, Coach Jorge Jesus, officials, and the fans to thank them for the opportunity to return to the club for the second time.
“Yesterday (6 January), to my surprise, I was informed that the renewal of my contract, which had been completed in December, just after the Libertadores and Brasileiro conquests, had been cancelled.
“In my first stint at the club, when I took office knowing the challenge, with much sacrifice, we won the titles of the 2013 Copa do Brasil and the 2014 Carioca.
“Now in 2019 we earned three more achievements: Carioca, Brasileiro, and Libertadores.
“Seeing the love of this crowd and their ability to push the team moved me every time, it was clear from the huge crowd that went to Peru that we would win the Libertadores and perform well in Doha at the World Cup.
“I take forever with me the examples of encouragement and affection I received from professionals and employees, with whom I had the opportunity to work with, and this fantastic crowd.
“I would like to give special thanks to Marcos Braz, who in December 2018 summoned me to take up the position at Flamengo and with whom I had a relationship of great respect and professionalism.
“I am witness to the devotion that Marcos Braz has for Flamengo, leaving his personal life and devoting himself full time to the club and I assure that in delicate moments, his attitude has always shown a lot of firmness in conducting the group.
“When I suggested to Marcos Braz the hiring of coach Jorge Jesus, he trusted my appointment and that was decisive in getting Jesus to come.
“Everything went very well, especially the work developed by the manager and the results show that.
“I leave with the certainty of fulfilling my role and thank you for the opportunity. Good luck to CR Flamengo!!!”
