After being released by Arsenal, 23-year-old defender Omar Rekik has found a new club in 16-time Slovenian First League champions NK Marbor.
Rekik went through the youth academy of Feyenoord, Manchester City, PSV, Olympique Marseille and Hertha BSC before joining Arsenal in 2021. However, he never made his senior debut for the Gunners and found first-team experience with loans to Sparta Rotterdam, Wigan Athletic and Servette FC in Switzerland.
Out of contract since the summer, the Tunisian international Rekik signed in Slovenia after six months as a free agent and spoke fondly upon his arrival at the Purples.
“The people in the club and in the city are friendly. I have already got to know the city and I like it. It is a bit cold and I have to get used to the weather, but the first impressions are very good.
“I want us to be successful. If the team is successful, you as a player can be successful too. I hope that we can do something really nice with this team this season.”
After 18 games this season, Maribor are second in the table and six points behind NK Olimpija Ljubljana.
