“Everybody associated with Chelsea Football Club is devastated to learn of the passing of our former player, captain and assistant coach, Ray Wilkins. Rest in peace, Ray, you will be dreadfully missed,” Chelsea FC said on Twitter.

A 24-year playing career saw Wilkins play for 12 clubs but he will be remembered best for his successful spells with Chelsea, Manchester United, and AC Milan. He also won 84 England caps and appeared at two World Cups.

Wilkins remained in the game after ending his playing career in 1997 and enjoyed three spells as assistant manager at Chelsea, where he was integral part of Carlo Ancelotti’s backroom staff  when the club won the double in 2010.
