Ex-England striker Jermain Defoe has announced his retirement as a footballer after 22 years.

Defoe made 57 appearances for England, scoring 20 goals. He is ninth on the all-time Premier League top scorers list, netting 162 top flight goals in England, with the majority of those coming across two stints at Tottenham Hotspur.

Defoe started his professional career at West Ham before playing for Bournemouth, Spurs, Portsmouth, Toronto FC, Sunderland and Rangers.

He rejoined Sunderland in January on a deal until the end of the season.

Across all competitions, Defoe scored 305 goals in 763 appearances at club level.
