According to Voetbal International, Phillip Cocu has officially resigned from his role as head coach of Vitesse following their 3-1 home defeat to Heerenveen. The 53-year-old took over as manager in September 2022, but having started this season with eight defeats from twelve matches he’s made the decision to resign.
The pressure has been mounting on Phillip Cocu for sometime now, as his side have suffered several heavy defeats this season. Last weekend, Vitesse were thrashed 5-1 against Go Ahead Eagles. Just a few weeks before, they lost 4-0 to Feyenoord and two weeks before that they lost 3-1 to NEC Nijmegen. Saturday night’s defeat to Heerenveen was the final straw for Cocu, who has failed to turn things around at Vitesse.
Vitesse supporters grew extremely frustrated about the state of their club and pointed the arrows at Cocu on Saturday. The former Derby County manager’s departure was demanded by supporters who held up banners throughout the match. Vitesse now have the international break to search for Cocu’s successor. They’re in desperate need of a saviour as they’re currently rock bottom in the Eredivisie table with just eight points from their opening 12 matches.
