Gary Cahill, best remembered for a successful spell at the heart of Chelsea’s defence, has retired from the game at the age of 36.

He announced the news on Wednesday morning, bringing an end to a career which began at Aston Villa in 2004.

After leaving for Bolton in 2008, he enjoyed a four-year spell with the Trotters which earned him a move to Stamford Bridge.

During Cahill’s time at Chelsea, he won every major domestic honour as well as the Champions League and two Europa League titles.

Two more seasons in the Premier League followed with Crystal Palace and he helped Bournemouth gain promotion last season before deciding to hang up his boots.

Cahill also won 61 caps for England and scored five times and is the second ex-international in as many days to retire after Aaron Lennon on Tuesday.
