Former Chelsea and Stoke City midfielder continues to suffer with Vitesse at the bottom of the Eredivisie table

Former Chelsea and Stoke City midfielder Marco van Ginkel captained Vitesse as they suffered a horrendous 5-0 defeat to Almere City on Sunday. Vitesse are currently rock bottom of the Eredivisie table having lost eleven of their opening sixteen matches this season. The club are at serious risk of suffering their first relegation from the top flight since the 79/80 campaign.

Marco van Ginkel has featured in all but one of Vitesse’s matches this season. The 31-year-old centre midfielder, who previously made two first team appearances for Chelsea, has been pushed much higher up the pitch this season in an attempt to score more goals. However, it simply hasn’t been a good enough start to the season for the side that was previously home to former Chelsea player’s Dominic Solanke and Mason Mount.

Last month, Vitesse sacked former Derby County and PSV head coach Phillip Cocu following the dreadful start to the campaign. Edward Sturing was bought in to replace Cocu, but things are yet to change. The January transfer window will be huge for the side that have scored just twelve goals this season.
