Former Celtic winger Gary Mackay-Steven has signed a one-year contract with Scottish Championship side Ross County…

Gary Mackay-Steven scored twice in Celtic’s 3-1 win over St Johnstone at Celtic Park on 23 January 2016.

The 34-year-old played at the Hoops for two and a half years, netting 10 goals and providing 11 assists in 62 games.

It was a January transfer window to remember as Mackay-Steven alongside his Dundee United teammate Stuart Armstrong rocked up to Celtic Park and signed for Ronny Deila’s men from Dundee United ahead of the second half of the 2014/15 season commencing.

During his time under Deila and latterly Brendan Rodgers, Mackay-Steven picked up five domestic honours including three Scottish Premiership titles, one Scottish Cup and one Scottish League Cup.

He left for Aberdeen in 2017 and later had stints with New York City and Heart of Midlothian.

After a short spell at Rugby Park, Mackay-Steven was recently let go by Kilmarnock and has now rejoined Ross County, the club where he began his career prior to moving to Liverpool as a youth player.

Confirming the signing news on their club website, the Staggies statement read: “Ross County FC are delighted to announce the signing of Gary Mackay-Steven on a one-year deal.”

“Gary is an experienced winger with over 400 career matches with teams such as Celtic, Aberdeen, New York City FC and most recently Kilmarnock. He is familiar with the club, having come through our youth ranks before joining Liverpool at the age of 17.”

Ross County were recently relegated to the Scottish Championship following their defeat in the relegation play-off against David Martindale’s Livingston.

Manager Don Cowie shared his delight at signing Mackay-Steven as his squad aims to achieve immediate promotion back to the Scottish Premiership: “Gary is another great addition to the group as he makes his return to the club,” he said.

“He offers us good experience in the wide area of the pitch, and we are delighted he has chosen to head back up North for the next chapter of his career.”

Best of luck to the former Celt up in Dingwall and trying to get Ross County back up into the Scottish Premiership. Our travelling support will certainly miss the trips up to Dingwall and indeed to Perth next season with County and St Johnstone dropping to the Championship and being replaced by Falkirk and Livingston.
