The Staggies are targeting an immediate return to the Premiership following their relegation via the play-offs last season. After three consecutive 11th-place finishes in the top flight, the Dingwall club will now attempt to reset and bounce back, and Mackay-Steven’s arrival is seen as a key part of that strategy.

Mackay-Steven, 33, joins Ross County after a brief stint with Kilmarnock, where he made just 10 league appearances last season. The two-time Scotland international brings a wealth of experience and flair to Victoria Park, having enjoyed a well-travelled career that has included spells at Celtic, Aberdeen, Hearts, New York City FC, and Dundee United. As reported by GlasgowWorld, Ross County’s manager, Don Cowie, had this to say about the signing

“Gary is another great addition to the group as he makes his return to the club,” said Ross County manager Don Cowie. “He offers us good experience in the wide area of the pitch, and we are delighted he has chosen to head back up North for the next chapter of his career.”

Born in Thurso, Mackay-Steven is no stranger to Ross County, having spent time at the club in his youth before departing to pursue opportunities in England with Liverpool and Fulham. He eventually made his professional breakthrough at Airdrieonians before gaining prominence during a highly successful stint at Dundee United. There, he registered 27 goals and 36 assists across 131 appearances, which led to a high-profile move to Celtic in 2014.

At Parkhead, Mackay-Steven helped the Hoops to three league titles and a League Cup under Ronny Deila and Brendan Rodgers. He made 62 appearances in all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing 11 assists.

I’m absolutely delighted to be here and to get everything done and dusted today,” Mackay-Steven said upon his initial move to Celtic. “It’s been a crazy few hours, but I’m over the moon.”

Ross County will hope his experience at the highest level of Scottish football can prove crucial in guiding them back to the top tier. Their last Championship campaign in 2018/19 ended in success, when they secured the title with 21 wins in 36 matches. The Highland outfit will be looking to replicate that feat — this time with a former Celtic winger in their ranks.
