Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon is targeting a Europa League upset against Manchester United this week. The Irishman will take his Omonia Nicosia side to Old Trafford with an eye on a memorable upset against Erik Ten Haag’s men, who are reeling after a 6-3 thrashing by Man City today.

Speaking after his side recorded a 2-0 win over Doxa in the Cyprus First Division, Lennon was already looking forward to the game at Old Trafford.

“We are all very excited about playing Manchester United for a number of reasons, obviously because they are one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“It will be a great experience for my players and some of them are Manchester United supporters!

“They are huge around the world so we welcome them here. However, we want to compete and get something out of the game.

“They have beaten Liverpool and Arsenal recently and they seem to have sorted themselves out after a poor start and they have steadied the ship. But every team is beatable on any given day so we must believe we can win.

“We must endeavour to get something out of the game to give ourselves a foothold in the group.”

United were beaten 6-3 thanks to hat-tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden as Pep Guardiola’s side ruled Manchester. The ex-Celtic player and manager was involved in the team that beat United 1-0 thanks to Nakamura’s free-kick back in November 2006.

It has been ten years since Celtic beat Spartak Moscow away from home in the Champions League. Lennon’s team were always streetwise away from home in Europe and they picked up some memorable results. He will certainly be hoping to frustrate United, who will likely shuffle their pack after the defeat to City.
