Former Celtic fans’ favourite Shen Mengyu has joined London City Lionesses on a three-year deal.

WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Pride this afternoon.

Shen joins London City Lionesses after leaving former club Celtic upon the expiry of her contract earlier this summer. The 22-year-old became the first female Chinese player to play in Scotland when she signed for The Hoops in summer 2021. She went on to make 83 appearances for Celtic in all competitions in which she scored 27 goals. She was a title winner with the Glasgow giants in 2021/2022 while she also won two Scottish Gas Women’s Scottish Cups in her time north of the border.

On the international stage, Shen is a member of the Chinese national team. She has made 12 appearances for her country to date in which she has scored two goals.

After joining London City Lionesses, Shen said “I can feel everyone’s ambition – we all have a clear goal, which is to win promotion to the Women’s Super League.

“I’m very proud to play for a team with this kind of ambition and believe that we will surprise everyone, with the support of Michele [Kang] and Jocelyn [Prêcheur].

“As a midfielder, I like to control the game and create chances by controlling the tempo and passing the ball. I don’t want to define what kind of player I am – because I will work hard in every role I’m asked to play. I just want to win.”

Shen becomes London City Lionesses’ seventh signing of the summer transfer window.
