Former Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund star Mario Götze has stated in an exclusive interview with 11FREUNDE that he would have loved to play alongside Lionel Messi at Barcelona. The German has had endured some extremely turbulent years in his recent career, struggling massively with serious injuries.

Currently at PSV Eindhoven, the World Cup winner opened up about his aspirations to play at the highest level once more. He reflected upon his time at PSV so far, the last few years of his career which have not been kind to him, as well as the unfulfilled desires he still has as a footballer.

The 28-year old highlighted his title aspirations, saying that he would love to play in the Champions League once again. When asked about how Barcelona used to be his dream club, Mario Götze said that has not changed and was quick to express his admiration for Lionel Messi.

“Celebrating possession football with this team, alongside Lionel Messi, that would be a dream. But no longer at any price,” said Götze.

Götze was also asked what he meant when he said he would not follow his dream ‘at any cost.’ The midfielder seemed well aware of the current landscape at Barcelona, and said: Today, before every change, I would think very carefully about which people I will meet at a new club.”

After his winning goal in the 2018 World Cup final against Argentina, Barcelona and Messi fans do not have particularly fond memories of the German. However, he has never been shy to state how much he respects Messi.

Götze then proceeded to speak about how the injuries he suffered nearly forced him to end his career, while also talking about the fallouts with managers at Dortmund and so on. The interview provides a great perspective on how a star at such a young age left so much potential unfulfilled.
