If you’ve played any of the FIFA or Football Manager games over the last 10 years, you may be familiar with the name Alen Halilović. The Croatian midfielder was once hailed as the greatest wonderkid in those games, especially during his teenage years when he played for Barcelona.
Things didn’t quite go to plan for Halilović, who has since played for 12 different clubs over the last 10 years, including Hamburg, Heerenveen, Birmingham and Reading. Now, at the age of 27, Alen Halilović is playing for Fortuna Sittard, where he has kicked things off in superb style. The attacking midfielder joined Fortuna Sittard in the summer on a free transfer, and in five appearances he’s already impressing.
On Saturday, Fortuna faced Volendam in the Eredivisie. Alen Halilović picked up a goal and an assist as his side won 3-1. He was also involved in 15 attempts during the game (7 shots and 8 chances created), which is the highest tally for a Fortuna Sittard player since their last promotion in 2018, according to OptaJohan. Take a look at the midfielder’s scintillating strike below.
Fortuna currently sit in fifth place in the Eredivisie table after Matchday Five. A fantastic start to the campaign for new head coach Danny Buijs. Next up, they take on Go Ahead Eagles this Friday. They’ll be hoping to continue their unbeaten start to the season.
