Andreas Georgson transition to the role of assistant coach under the leadership of Russell Martin marks yet another chapter in Georgson’s illustrious career in football.
From the idyllic coastal city of Malmö to the bustling port town of Southampton, Georgson’s reputation as a set-piece specialist has garnered attention across European leagues.
Having already made his mark with stints at both Arsenal and Brentford, the seasoned coach is no stranger to the rigours and demands of English football.
Having won accolades and respect during his time in Malmö, he now steps onto the south coast of England to support the ambitious plans of Russell Martin, aiming to steer Southampton back into the Premier League’s limelight.
In the summer of 2021, Arsenal bid farewell to Andreas Georgson as he ventured back to his homeland to embrace a new challenge with Malmö FF.
As a set-piece specialist for the Gunners, he became an integral component of Mikel Arteta’s tactical framework. However, personal reasons coupled with the allure of a role with greater responsibility made the offer from Malmö too tempting to decline.
Mikel Arteta, in his endeavour to ensure a smooth transition, brought in Nicolas Jover, a former colleague from Manchester City.
Jover was roped in to enhance Arsenal’s set-piece play – an area where they excelled defensively but often left supporters wanting more when on the attack.
Georgson’s journey with Arsenal began after he parted ways with Brentford in 2020.
Prior to his time with Brentford, Georgson dedicated 14 years of his career to Malmö FF, undertaking various roles.
Speaking when he joined Brentford in 2019, Georgson said, “I have worked at Malmö FF for 14 years and have had several positions at the club: Head of Youth Scouting, Head of Methodology in the academy, Under-17 Head Coach and, for the last two years, Assistant Coach for the first team.
“I will finish the season with Malmo but then I am really looking forward to joining the team at Brentford in November and fighting for promotion to the Premier League over the coming years.”
