Nottingham Forest have made a bold and strategic appointment by naming Edu as their global head of football. The former Arsenal sporting director steps into a newly created role with a sweeping remit that includes overseeing recruitment, performance, squad strategy and player development.
Edu’s move aligns with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis’ broader ambitions across Europe and South America. Already overseeing Olympiakos and Rio Ave, Marinakis revealed in December that he had entered discussions to acquire Brazilian side Vasco da Gama, further reinforcing Forest’s expansive vision. Edu’s appointment is clearly more than symbolic. “This project connects deeply with my values around innovation and long-term planning. I look forward to building a global football model that is competitive, sustainable, and aligned with our president’s ambition,” Edu said.

The 47-year-old Brazilian’s stature was cemented through his work at Arsenal, where he enjoyed two Premier League titles as a player between 2001 and 2005. He returned to north London in 2019 as technical director and was promoted to sporting director in 2022, playing a vital role in reshaping the Gunners’ identity under Mikel Arteta. Edu was instrumental in recruiting the Spaniard, helping usher in a new era. Arsenal lifted the FA Cup in Arteta’s debut campaign and re-established themselves as serious title contenders during Edu’s tenure.
Edu’s football intelligence extends far beyond his Arsenal years. He played for Valencia and Corinthians and later held administrative posts with the latter, becoming director of football in 2011. From 2016 to 2019, he served as Brazil’s general coordinator, overseeing a period of transition and stability for the national team.
Now at Forest, Edu embarks on a challenge with continental dimensions, ready to shape a modern football structure across multiple clubs. “I’m truly excited about this new chapter and honoured by the trust placed in me,” he said. Forest have made a statement appointment, and Edu brings vision, pedigree and experience into their growing football empire.
