Former Arsenal and West Ham United attacker Alex Hennessy has joined Barclays Women’s Championship club Charlton Athletic on a free transfer.

The Addicks announced the transfer via an update on their official club website this evening.

Hennessy was a free agent after leaving former club West Ham United by mutual consent last week. The player has signed on at The Oakwood until the end of the season.

The 18-year-old spent the early days of her career in the Arsenal academy system. Hennessy made her senior debut for The Gunners in a 4-0 victory over Reading at the Select Car Leasing Stadium in the early stages of last season. The player left the North Londoners last summer and spent the first half of this season with West Ham United where she struggled for first team playing opportunities.

Hennessy is no stranger to Barclays Women’s Championship football. She spent the second half of last season on loan at Crystal Palace where she made nine appearances and scored one goal. She will now be hoping to impress in the second tier again with latest club Charlton Athletic.

After joining The Addicks, Hennessy said “I’m over the moon to be joining Charlton and working under Karen (Hills) and the staff. I feel it is a place where I can develop, gain further experience and grow as a player.”

Hennessy becomes Charlton Athletic boss Karen Hills’ first signing of the January transfer window.
