Many former professional players have turned into brilliant managers. The latest among them making waves is former Arsenal and Chelsea star Cesc Fàbregas. After being appointed head coach of Italian club Como following stints as assistant coach during their Serie B promotion campaign, he has done a brilliant job. In their first season back in the top flight after over 20 years, Como is currently 13th in the table, nine points clear of relegation.

Now, Fàbregas is on the radar of other clubs. According to Leipziger Volkszeitung, Cesc Fàbregas is under consideration at RB Leipzig as they continue their search for Marco Rose’s replacement.

Cesc Fàbregas is a player with a tremendous history in the Premier League. He started his career at Arsenal and captained the team before moving to Barcelona. After a three-year stay in Spain, he returned to the Premier League and signed for Chelsea. Back at the blue side of London, he won two Premier League titles. He left England after making 111 assists, a number that currently sees him in the top three of the all-time Premier League assist chart.

The Spanish World Cup and European Championship winner spent his final year at Italian Serie B club Como after a two-and-a-half-year period at French club Monaco. After hanging up his boots at Como, Fàbregas was appointed head coach of Como's under-19 and B teams in the summer of 2023. After first-team manager Moreno Longo's dismissal, Fàbregas was appointed interim head coach. He later stayed on as assistant after Osian Roberts was named caretaker manager.

Como finished third in Serie B and thus earned promotion to Serie A. Fàbregas was formally appointed as head coach of Como ahead of the 2024-25 season, signing a four-year contract just days after being admitted to the UEFA Pro coaching course organized yearly by the Italian Football Federation.

The report states that Leipzig will hope to make use of a mutual acquaintance to get the deal done. Thierry Henry is currently a shareholder at Como and has a good relationship with Red Bull Managing Director Oliver Mintzlaff due to Henry’s time at New York Red Bulls in the twilight of his career.

A potential hiring of Fàbregas seems opposite to the direction RB Leipzig has looked in their pursuit of a replacement. The names they have been linked with before the 37-year-old, such as Oliver Glasner, Matthias Jaissle, Danny Röhl, Alexander Blessin, and Roger Schmidt, have all previously worked under the Red Bull umbrella.
