Former Argentine NT defender Daniel 'Cata' Díaz retires at age 39 | OneFootball

Argentine centre-back Daniel ‘Cata’ Díaz announced his retirement on Monday, per a statement from Spanish third-tier side Fuenlabrada.

During his career, Díaz featured in 174 La Liga matches for Getafe and Atlético Madrid in addition to 165 career matches for Boca Juniors, where he helped his side win the 2007 Copa Libertadores crown and the 2005 Copa Sudamericana title.

For the Albiceleste, Díaz earned 12 caps, scoring once – a very memorable and important goal in a 1-0 win over Colombia during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers for Diego Maradona’s side.

Díaz also won the Copa del Rey with Atlético in 2013 and won the league with Boca Juniors on three separate occasions.

Díaz finished his career with Fuenlabrada, helping them to a club-best round-of-32 appearance in the Copa del Rey in 2017, where they lost to Real Madrid.

Díaz began his career with Rosario Central before moving to Cruz Azul and Colón ahead of his first of two moves to both Boca Juniors and Getafe, with a short spell at Atlético sandwiched in between.
