Former América midfielder Antônio Carlos Santos has taken aim at current manager Miguel Herrera, claiming that he got the job “without any merit”.

Santos was responding to comments Herrera made on the Adela Micha programme on Mexican television.

ESPN Mexico reports that Santos responded, saying that Herrera “has not done anything and came to the team without deserving it”.

The Brazilian took to Twitter to demean Herrera’s achievements in comparison to his own.

“You, with two tournaments won at Cruz Azul, don’t stain! I won long tournaments,” Santos posted.

The Rio de Janeiro native went on to suggest that Herrera was only appointed by the Azulcrema because someone “sweetened Azcárraga’s ear”.

That was a reference to Emilio Azcárraga Jean, who is CEO of Televisa, the mass media company that owns América.

Santos then put a poll up on his Twitter feed, asking the public to vote on “Who is more historical in America and who earned more?”

He almost certainly regrets doing that, seeing as Herrera won 75% of the almost 14,000 votes.
