Former Ajax Chief Executive Officer, Edwin van der Sar, has shown remarkable progress in his recovery after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage while on holiday in Croatia.

The 52-year-old football legend has confirmed that he has been moved out of intensive care to the delight of fans and well-wishers across the world.

Van der Sar was rushed to the hospital over a week ago following a bleed on the brain and was recovering in an intensive care unit (ICU) in Croatia before being transferred to a hospital in the Netherlands.

However, the former Manchester United goalkeeper has confirmed that he is out of the ICU, but will remain at the hospital until he is discharged by the medical experts.

In a statement released by Van der Sar on Twitter, he said: “First of all, we want to thank everyone for all the great and supportive messages.

“I’m happy to share that I’m no longer in the intensive care unit. However, I’m still in the hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery.”

Over his illustrious playing career that spanned 22 years, Van der Sar represented several clubs, including Ajax, Juventus, Fulham, and Man United where he ultimately hung up his boots.

The Dutch icon has been part of Ajax’s board of directors since November 2012 after retiring from professional football the previous year.

However, Van der Sar left his position as Ajax CEO last term following a disappointing campaign that saw the Dutch giants fail to win the Eredivisie title and miss out on next season’s Champions League tournament.
