The Suriname football association has announced that 37-year-old Kenneth Vermeer will join their national team. The former Ajax and Feyenoord goalkeeper previously played five matches for the Netherlands national team between 2012 and 2015. A change in FIFA rules means that it’s now possible for Vermeer to represent Suriname having played for another country.
Vermeer has spent the last two years at FC Cincinnati, where he’s featured 20 times. The experienced shot-stopper is now without a club after the MLS side announced his departure on Tuesday night. Vermeer has lifted five Eredivisie titles and three KNVB cups during his career. He also helped Club Brugge win the Belgian Pro League in 2018. Now he’ll be hoping to help Suriname qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the 2026 World Cup.
Vermeer is one of four new faces available for Suriname. Daishawn Redan (Venezia), Dhoraso Klaas (ADO Den Haag) and Stefano Denswil (Trabzonspor) have also been welcomed by the Surinamese association. Earlier this month, former Chelsea assistant manager Henk ten Cate was appointed as the assistant national coach of Suriname. Ten Cate will work alongside head coach Aron Winter.
