We predicted a week ago that Ian Maatsen’s move to Dortmund would develop quickly, and indeed it has.

Chelsea, Dortmund and the player were all on the same page, and the whole deal is done. Maatsen has signed a two years contract extension, Chelsea have agreed to loan him to Dortmund without a buy option, and the German side get the player until the summer for a small loan fee.

The idea is that looking good and playing regularly for Dortmund raises his value, and Chelsea profit from his sale in the summer.

Ben Jacobs says “formalities completed” today, presumably meaning the paperwork and a medical. Now we just have to await the official announcement from the clubs. Dortmund play a game on Saturday which will come too soon, but by next weekend they’ll want to have Maatsen available.

The left back was left out of Chelsea’s squad last night as he travelled to Germany.
