Manchester United star Phil Jones working on his return to fitness

According to the club’s official site, Manchester United star Phil Jones is working on his return to fitness.

The 29-year-old was spotted in training ahead of our Europa League quarter-final second-leg clash against Granada. While he is not going to feature tonight, it is encouraging to see him back on the pitch.

Jones is currently working separately with a fitness coach at the Aon Training Complex. Despite being added to United’s Premier League and Europa League squads earlier in the year, he is yet to feature this season.

Much was expected of Jones when Sir Alex Ferguson signed him from Blackburn Rovers in 2011. Injuries have largely seen him struggle and at 29, his days at the club may be numbered.

With David de Gea also looking likely to leave, the Red Devils may be about to lose the last two players from the Ferguson era.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had revealed earlier this season that he is doubtful if Jones will feature in the current campaign. However, he did go on to add that the defender may yet have a role to play.

Jones at best will add to the numbers if not the quality of our defensive options. The 29-year-old may be the only centre-back at the club with a Premier League medal, however, he is not the answer we seek.

He still has a number of years left in him and could potentially kickstart his career elsewhere. There is little to be gained for both parties if he continues to stay at United.

  1. Manchester United and Manchester City hold an advantage in Harry Kane pursuit
  2. Manchester United will need to fork out £60m to sign Raphael Varane
  3. Amazon set to base new documentary series on Manchester United star Paul Pogba

Jones has played 224 times for United during his decade long stay at the club. He was a part of the United side that won the 2012/13 English Premier League title, the 2016 FA Cup and the 2017 Europa League.
