Nottingham Forest are preparing an official complaint to the Premier League over Tottenham Hotspur’s move for Morgan Gibbs-White.
Spurs have activated a £60m release clause in the midfielder’s contract but a potential deal has now been delayed as Forest consider legal action.
Forest believe Spurs have made an illegal approach for the England international, despite the presence of the release clause in the player’s contract. Spurs had hoped to complete the midfielder’s medical and transfer on Friday.
News of Gibbs-White’s release clause came as a surprise this week, after Manchester City had expressed interest in the 25-year-old earlier this summer. City were reportedly quoted a fee of around £100m.
According to journalist Alex Crook on talkSPORT, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is unhappy with his recruitment team over the clause in Gibbs-White’s contract.
Forest signed the midfielder from Wolves for a fee that could rise to £42.5m in 2022, with only a marginal profit included as a release clause.
Crook said: “From what I’m being told this morning, Marinakis is not particularly enamoured with his former recruitment team.
“They signed a player for £42.5m and agreed on a £60m release clause; those two numbers don’t really add up.”
