After a strong Sheffield United start as they aimed to overturn the 2-1 first leg deficit, they were caught cold after 19 minutes when Brennan Johnson fired Forest two goals clear in the tie by popping up at the back post to find the net.

In doing so, he followed in his father David’s footsteps in scoring in both legs of a Sheffield United-Nottingham Forest play-off tie, after his dad did the same in 2003 for the same side.

The Blades dragged themselves back into things with a fine move moments after half-time which culminated with Morgan Gibbs-White converting from a Sander Berge delivery.

And on 75 minutes, they got the equaliser which sent the tie to extra-time and stun the home support when they broke quickly down the right and a low cross into the middle was turned in by a sliding John Fleck.

Joe Lolley and Johnson missed decent extra-time chances for Forest, while the visitors were denied when Brice Samba produced a stunning close range save at the other end to keep out Iliman Ndiaye when he seemed certain to score to send the contest to a penalty shoot-out.

From 12 yards, Samba was at it again as he saved from Oliver Norwood, Conor Hourihane and Gibbs-White as his side won 3-2 on penalties to end their play-off win hoodoo.

Forest march on to face Huddersfield Town at Wembley following their win over Luton.
