Nottingham Forest intervened at an auction in England to return a piece of European Cup history to the club.

According to The Athletic, former player and England international Viv Anderson listed his winning medal from the 1980 final up for grabs.

However, club owner Evangelos Marinakis stepped in at the last minute to ensure the item was back with the club instead of the trophy cabinet of a local football fan.

Forest beat Hamburg 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu that season thanks to John Robertson’s first-half strike. The lone goal secured back-to-back titles for the Premier League club.

“Mr Marinakis has enormous respect for Viv Anderson, as well as all the European Cup winners, and recognises the importance of the club celebrating its rich history,” said a Forest spokesman.

“The medal will be a prominent addition in the club’s museum and we are delighted to acquire this important piece of history from one of the players who brought greatness to Nottingham Forest.”

Following his spell with Forest, Anderson also had stints at Arsenal and Manchester United and registered 30 caps for England.
