Nottingham Forest are close to making Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey their 25th signing since last summer.
That is according to a report in the Telegraph on Sunday night which states that he is set to undergo a medical in Nottingham on Monday ahead of a permanent move to the City Ground.
Newcastle are currently in talks with several clubs about bringing in a replacement on loan but regardless of whether they can find a suitable candidate, Shelvey will be allowed to move on.
The former Liverpool man is understood to be eager on making the move and is likely to sign a two-and-a-half year deal, per Luke Edwards, who also states that the transfer fee will be minimal with the player in the final six months of his current deal.
His wish for regular football means that Eddie Howe has decided not to stand in Shelvey’s way and will allow him to move on, ending an almost seven-year stay on Tyneside.
He is also believed to be one of a number of new signings Steve Cooper’s side want to make before Tuesday’s deadline in a bid to help them cope with their raft of injuries.
A hamstring issue has sidelined him for much of the current season but he is near a return fo full fitness and is in line to be available for selection within the next two weeks.
It also helps the Magpies in their attempts to reduce the wage bill this month but they have been unable to find suitors for Ryan Fraser, Matt Ritchie or Jamal Lewis.
