Manchester City summer signing Matheus Nunes has issued an apology to Wolves fans ahead of returning to Molineux this weekend.

Pep Guardiola’s side travel to the Midlands bidding to extend their winning start to the season to seven consecutive matches, after an imperious start to the defence of their Premier League title.

Manchester City, who were dumped out of the Carabao Cup in the midweek, are looking to win the Premier League for a fourth successive season, and travel to face a Wolves side on Saturday that are winless since August.

Former Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes moved to the Etihad Stadium on Deadline Day, completing a £53 million transfer to Manchester City just one year after moving to Molineux from Sporting Lisbon, for a club-record fee.

The 25-year-old impressed during his debut season in the Premier League, and has made a strong start at Manchester City, featuring in four matches, including registering an assist against Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Nunes was one of several late midfielder targets for Manchester City during the remaining weeks of the summer transfer window, and in attempt to force a move to the Sky Blues, the Portugal midfielder dramatically refused to train for Wolves.

Ahead of a return to Molineux on Saturday, the midfielder issued an apology to Wolves supporters, during an interview with the Manchester Evening News.

“I can understand there are some [Wolves] supporters not happy with my decision [to leave] and for that I’m sorry,” said the 25-year-old.

“I made my decision but it was an opportunity I couldn’t say no to. Manchester City is a top [club] with the best players in the world, the best manager. They won the treble last year.

“I don’t know if I’d ever get that opportunity again, so I just took my chance. I’ll always be grateful for Wolves giving me that opportunity.

“I know it may upset some fans about my decision to not train. For that, I’m sorry.

“It was something, maybe I would have done differently but it was my decision because I couldn’t let this opportunity pass by.”

Nunes was Manchester City’s fourth and final signing of the transfer window, moving to the Etihad Stadium alongside Jeremy Doku, Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic.

The Portugal midfielder looks set to start against his former club, as Guardiola grapples with the absences of Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne for Saturday’s Premier League clash.
