Barcelona’s summer transfer window has largely revolved around Nico Williams.
The youngster emerged as the Azulgranas’ top transfer target after his promising performances at Euro 2024, but matters have not proceeded how Joan Laporta and Co. would have liked.
Recent updates suggest that the player is keen on staying in the Basque country for another year at least, but Barcelona insist that they will not return to sign him next summer.
Nico’s decision is expected in the coming days and Barcelona have also set a theoretical deadline beyond which they will not wait.
After all, they have been left paralysed on the market owing to his indecision.
In an interesting development, football pundit Neal Gardener has come out via X to claim that Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon would be a very viable alternative for Barcelona should they fail to sign Nico this summer.
The 23-year-old forward served as a regular starter down the Magpies’ left flank last season, making 35 appearances in the Premier League and six in the UEFA Champions League.
Across the two competitions, he recorded 11 goals and 10 assists to his name, averaging 1.6 key passes per game and creating 16 big chances in the process.
Gordon’s current deal with Newcastle extends until the summer of 2026. He thus has less than two years on his current contract making him a favourable target.
Liverpool are interested in signing the young winger and has been actively pursuing him for a long time.
Newcastle, however, are adamant about keeping his services and are pushing for a renewal.
It will be interesting to see if the tables turn if Barcelona enter the race for Gordon. As it stands, however, the Blaugrana have no such intention and are focused on Nico’s arrival.
