Paulo Fonseca has confirmed that Alvaro Morata will start up front for AC Milan against Liverpool tomorrow, while he also spoke about the inspiration that Zlatan Ibrahimovic provides.

The biggest home game of Milan’s Champions League ‘league phase’ campaign, at least on paper, is Liverpool at home. There is a profound history between the two clubs given that they have met in two prior finals, and it is arguably the tie of the night across Europe.

Milan, however, have not started the season brilliantly as they failed to win any of their first three league games, while Liverpool not only won theirs but they scored seven and didn’t concede in the process, including a 3-0 victory over rivals Manchester United.

Yet, on Saturday, the script flipped somewhat. The Rossoneri won 4-0 having been four goals to the good inside 30 minutes against Venezia, while Arne Slot’s side tasted defeat at home against a Nottingham Forest side who had not won since 1969 at Anfield.

In addition to doing his pre-match press conference, Fonseca also spoke to Sky on the eve of the game against Liverpool and his comments to the broadcaster were relayed by MilanNews.

A big night awaits…

“It’s a privilege to return to the Champions League coaching Milan. We must do everything we can to start the Champions League well. It won’t be easy, Liverpool are one of the best teams in Europe.

“We all know our quality, now we must understand that together we are all stronger. Winning tomorrow would bring great awareness and confidence. It’s an important match, not decisive, it’s a great opportunity for us.”

How does the team look to you?

“One of the most important things is to be balanced. I see the team growing, we have two important games, they are the games that everyone wants to play. It is a privilege to be able to play games like this. We must play without fear, with courage and balance.”

How important is Ibrahimovic?

“He is an inspiration for all of us. He is too important for us. Today he was here with us, it is always important to have him by our side.”

How is Morata?

“He will play tomorrow. He has recovered well, he is fine. Abraham played his first match, we only had two days of recovery, so Morata will play tomorrow.”
