Fluminense won the Copa Libertadores after a dramatic victory over Boca Juniors in extra-time.
Scorers: Advíncula 72′; Cano 36′, Kennedy 99′
The Maracanã was rocking on Saturday as two of the biggest clubs in Argentina and Brazil battled it out for one of South America’s most coveted titles.
With Edinson Cavani leading the line, Boca Juniors initially hinted they would take control of this final with waves of attack, but one moment of brilliance flipped the script.
Marcelo’s Fluminense forced their opponents into an overload on the right wing, and a lurking Germán Cano found space near the top of the box.
The 35-year-old Argentine striker drilled home his 13th Copa Libertadores goal in 12 games this season.
The match continued to be a nervy contest after the break, and as the tempo slowed, another moment of brilliance injected life into the final.
A stunning curler from outside the box by Luis Advíncula beat five flat-footed Fluminense players plus a diving Sergio Romero and the ball nestled into the far left corner.
The equaliser (alongside a late scuff from Diogo Barbosa) forced the match to enter extra time. Both Cavani and Marcelo were already hauled off.
A spectacular team move from Fluminense then sent the stadium into a frenzy.
A ball over the top found 21-year-old John Kennedy, who volleyed home a belter. He immediately jumped into the stands in celebration, but the referee opted to show him a second yellow for doing so.
The match became increasingly heated, and Boca Juniors immediately lost their man advantage.
Frank Fabra lost his temper and hit an opposition payer in the face. VAR was called in, and the player was the next to go walking, leaving things 10 against 10.
Despite an entire second half of extra time, nobody could conjure up another equaliser for the club from Argentina.
The win was the first Copa Libertadores title for Fluminense, while Boca Juniors missed a chance to move level for all-time victories.
