To say Florian Thauvin regretted originally moving to Newcastle from Marseille would be an understatement.

Thauvin has revitalised his career ever since he went back to the French outfit, winning the World Cup with France and scoring 50 goals and contributing 24 assists with Marseille since originally leaving Newcastle on loan in January 2016.

Speaking to Onze Mondial, Thauvin says that he went back to Marseille to prove a point after he didn’t make the grade at St. James’ Park.

“Over there, I thought my career was fu**ed.

“I came home in the evening and told my girlfriend that this was it – it was over.

“I wasn’t playing at Newcastle. I ended up at this club lost, no one talked to me. My phone never rang. I had my family and my girlfriend.

“That’s when I decided to grab the bull by the horns and said ‘I’m going back to Marseille and I’ll make a name for myself’. And that’s what happened.”

Thauvin signed during the Steve McClaren era, and although Rafa Benítez asked him to stay after they were relegated to the Championship, the 25-year-old had decided that he was done with Newcastle.

“I made some bad decisions,” Thauvin said of his move to England, “I can tell you, today, I have a good entourage, and it’s a lot easier for me to feel good. It’s all a lot simpler.

“I made the wrong choices in the past, no one was there to help me at that time, and that’s why I got it wrong.

“Maybe if I’d stayed longer, I could have won a spot in the team, but I wasn’t thinking about that.

“I told myself I wasn’t playing and I wanted to leave – to go back to Marseille.”
