Raphinha, Pedri, and Lamine Yamal made headlines for their starring displays for Barcelona last night against Benfica, and deservedly so.

However, another player who was equally crucial in the victory was young left-back Alejandro Balde. His marauding runs from the left-back position were a constant source of threat and even led to Raphinha’s second goal of the night, killing off the tie even before half-time.

Back to his best physically

Now, as highlighted by SPORT, Balde is near his peak in terms of his physical level. Manager Hansi Flick has managed his minutes carefully, rotating him when needed to ensure he can unleash his full athletic potential at crucial moments.

One of the key differences between the Barça side that won La Liga under Xavi and last season’s team was the form of Balde.

During the 2022/23 campaign, the young left-back was a powerhouse, but his performances dipped significantly last season.

Now, the 21-year-old full-back is once again covering the entire left flank with incredible energy, reminiscent of his breakout season.

Flick has managed the youngster’s minutes carefully, especially after a bad injury last season. The playing time given to Gerard Martin has not only aided the former Cornella defender’s development but also allowed Balde to perform at his highest level when on the pitch.

Balde is not only regaining his explosiveness but is also making better decisions with the ball. With his current confidence, the 21-year-old academy graduate continues to refine his crossing and overall play, aiming to establish himself as one of the world’s best left-backs.

This season he has been directly involved in eight goals – scoring once and providing seven assists. His overlapping runs and direct dribbles help Barcelona break defensive lines and ease the team’s build-up play, creating space for his teammates.

Balde made his first-team debut under Ronald Koeman, and he flourished with Xavi. However, it seems that under Flick, he is set to consolidate his status as one of the best left-backs in world football.
