Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has asked sporting director Deco to explore a move for Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong, according to an update from Cule Mania.

The Dutch right-back has long been on Barça’s radar, and Flick sees him as an ideal addition to bolster the team’s defensive options.

Flick’s admiration for Frimpong

Flick is known for his methodical and discreet approach to squad building. He shares a strong working relationship with Deco, and both are in agreement that reinforcements at full-back are necessary.

In fact, it must be noted that Flick had discussed Frimpong’s signing with Deco a year ago, but Barcelona ultimately ruled out the move due to financial constraints.

At the time, Bayer Leverkusen’s €40 million asking price was deemed excessive by the club.

However, despite the failed attempt, Flick remains convinced that Frimpong would bring a new dynamic to Barcelona’s defence.

Unlike Jules Kounde, who has been deployed as a right-back but prefers playing centrally, Frimpong is a natural attacking full-back who can also operate as a winger.

Financial challenges and Premier League interest

Frimpong, 24, is under contract with Bayer Leverkusen until 2028, meaning his club holds a strong negotiating position. Barcelona, however, are only willing to offer around €25 million—significantly lower than Leverkusen’s valuation.

This could complicate any potential deal, especially since Liverpool and other Premier League clubs have also expressed interest in signing him.

Given Frimpong’s offensive qualities, pace, and ability to play in multiple positions, he is considered ready to take the next step in his career.

Reports suggest that Spain and England are the most realistic destinations for him, and inquiries regarding his availability have already been made.

What does it mean for Hector Fort?

One key consequence of Frimpong’s potential arrival would be the departure of Hector Fort. The young full-back, who featured on both the right and left sides, has not been able to convince Flick completely this season.

As a result, his future at Barcelona looks increasingly uncertain, and he could be offloaded if Frimpong joins the club.

With Barça’s financial struggles still a major hurdle, securing a deal for Frimpong will not be easy.

However, Flick’s insistence on reinforcing the full-back position suggests that the club will continue pushing for an affordable solution, whether it is Frimpong or another alternative.
