Gerson’s long goodbye at Flamengo began with victory over América Mineiro at the Maracanã on Sunday.

The Marseille-bound midfielder produced a fine performance as goals from Bruno Henrique and Rodrigo Muniz maintained the Rubro-Negro’s 100% start to the Brasileirão season.

Speaking after the game, the 24-year-old claimed that he hopes to return to play for the Mengão again before he hangs up his boots.

“I made a dream come true, of having the opportunity to wear the sacred robe,” Gerson said, per Gazeta Esportiva.

“I hope to return one day. Very happy for everything I lived in here. I hope Flamengo continues to achieve many things.”

Gerson has helped win a host of silverware since joining from Roma in 2019, including the Copa Libertadores, two Brazilian championships and two Supercopa do Brasils.

His last game before leaving for the south of France is scheduled to be against Fortaleza on 23 June.
