Flamengo’s hopes of retaining the Brasileirão title were severely dented as they were beaten at home by Grêmio on Sunday.
Scorer: Borja 45 +3′
It took until the very end of a pretty even, and at times feisty, first half for the deadlock to be broken.
With the three minutes of additional time almost elapsed, Ferreira clipped in a lovely cross which was brilliantly redirected to the net by the head of Miguel Angel Borja.
The visitors were dealt a blow shortly after the interval when goalkeeper Gabriel Chapecó had to be replaced by Brenno after a nasty collision with team-mate Ruan.
Flamengo introduced Pedro, Bruno Henrique, and Kenedy as they tried to rescue a point at the very least.
Borja had the opportunity to put the result beyond doubt with a penalty deep into extra time, but goalkeeper Diego Alves pulled off a tremendous save.
The victory gave Grêmio a measure of revenge after they had exited the Copa do Brasil 6-0 on aggregate at the quarter-final stage at the hands of Flamengo in midweek.
Flamengo now lie 11 points behind leaders Atlético Mineiro, with just a single game in hand.
