The visitors endured a difficult first half at the Estádio da Serrinha. While they dominated possession, it was Goiás who created the best chances.

The best opportunity came 10 minutes before the break, and Dieguinho will feel he should have done better when he screwed his shot wide after being put through with only Fla goalkeeper Santos to beat.

With Flamengo becoming increasingly frustrated with their inability to make the breakthrough, the Esmeraldino dealt them a body blow by opening the scoring with just 10 minutes remaining.

Pedro Raul provided the assist and Dieguinho had a huge slice of luck as his shot deflected off his standing foot and looped into the net.

That concession lit a fire under Flamengo and they managed to equalise just four minutes later when Léo Pereira’s presence spooked Goiás goalkeeper Tadeus into spilling a corner, allowing substitute Matheus França to volley home from close range.

Despite eight minutes of stoppage time the Mengão were unable to snatch a victory and the result leaves them in third place, nine points behind leaders Palmeiras.

Next up for Flamengo is their Copa do Brasil second leg clash at home to São Paulo on Wednesday, as Dorival Júnior’s men defend a 3-1 lead from the first leg.
