Flamengo took an early lead when centre-forward Lázaro headed home from close range following Arturo Vidal’s knockdown.

The Chilean met Ayrton Lucas’ first-time cross and put the ball back into a dangerous area as Lázaro reacted quickest with Diego Alves routed to his spot in the São Paulo’s goal.

Flamengo looked the most dangerous in the first period as Diego fired wide before Mariano’s speculative effort was palmed away by Alves whilst, at the other end, Aderbar Santos was forced into a good save.

São Paulo’s best chances came ten minutes after the restart as Marcos Guilherme could only divert his header straight down Santos’ throat before Pablo Maia’s shot from the edge of the box found the Rubo-Negro keeper as well.

With the introduction of Gabriel Barbosa providing a much-needed attacking spark, the visitors fashioned multiple chances to put the game to bed but were unable to find the back of the net.

Guilherme had another fantastic chance to draw level but, with five minutes left on the clock, could only divert a bouncing crossing over the crossbar.

In the end, Gabriel Barbosa would capitalize in the dying seconds with a fluid counterattack to double the lead as Flamengo moved to within three points of Corinthians in second place.
