Flamengo have been eliminated from the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup.

The vast majority of football fans predicted the Brazilian side would at least reach the final of the competition.

But in their semi-final match against Al-Hilal on Tuesday evening, Flamengo were on the receiving end of a shock 3-2 defeat.

The Copa Libertadores holders went into the fixture at Morocco's Stade de Tanger with pretty much a full-strength lineup.

Pedro and Gabriel Barbosa were the two strikers, while Everton Ribeiro and Giorgian de Arrascaeta started out wide - four international level players.

Ex-Arsenal and Chelsea defender David Luiz was also part of the back four, but even he couldn't prevent their Saudi Arabian opposition from scoring three times.

Two penalties from 2022 World Cup hero Salem Al-Dawsari, either side of a goal from Pedro, saw Al-Hilal go in at the break with the advantage.

Gerson was also shown a second yellow card for the foul that resulted in the second penalty - and Al-Hilal took advantage of the situation by making it 3-1 in the 70th minute through Luciano Vietto.

Pedro pulled one back in the first minute of stoppage-time, but the Saudi outfit were able to hold on for a historic victory.

And their sizeable achievement means an Instagram post from Luiz has aged like milk.

After beating Athletico Paranaense 1-0 in the Copa Libertadores final on October 29th, the Brazilian defender uploaded footage of his teammates singing a song about Champions League holders, Real Madrid.

Per BeSoccer, they sung: "Real Madrid, you can wait, your moment will come."

The Flamengo squad clearly had high hopes of defeating Los Blancos to lift the Club World Cup, emulating the great Zico-led team that thrashed Liverpool 3-0 in the 1981 final.

Unfortunately, they couldn't even get past the first hurdle.

Yeah, not ideal that...

To make matters even funnier for Real Madrid fans, who play Al-Ahly in their semi-final on Wednesday, former Barcelona midfielder Arturo Vidal was on the receiving of some humiliation after coming on as a substitute.

The Chilean midfielder was left sprawled out on the turf by some brilliant skill from Vietto, who proved to be the match winner.

The phrase 'sent him for a hotdog' springs to mind.
