Flamengo are eager to reward manager Dorival Júnior with a new contract.

The 60-year-old was appointed in June after the ill-fated and short-lived tenure of Paulo Sousa.

Since taking the reins from the former Poland boss, Júnior has resuscitated the Rubro-Negro’s Brasileirão challenge and also led them to the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores.

With the feel good factor back in the club, vice president of football Marcos Braz admitted they want to extend Júnior’s stay beyond this December.

“No one hires a manager to separate. When you get married, you’re home to stay forever,” Braz told journalist Venê Casagrande.

“I want to make it clear as naturally as possible that our thought is to continue with Dorival Júnior.

“Our thought is to be with Dorival like now, because it is a natural process of football and of life. Dorival believed in our project, he believed in us. It was good for him to come to Flamengo.

“The natural thing is for him to continue. We didn’t hire any manager to fire him.”

Flamengo will be looking to leap-frog fourth-placed Athletico Paranaense when the sides meet in the league at the Maracanã on Sunday.
