Flamengo goalkeeper Hugo Souza is set to be given an opportunity to redeem himself in Saturday’s Brasileirão clash with Atlético Goianiense.

The 21-year-old stopper replaced Diego Alves during last Wednesday’s Copa do Brasil quarter-final first leg against São Paulo at the Maracanã.

Unfortunately for Souza, his error in the dying stages led to Brenner giving the Tricolor a 2-1 win and has left the Rubro-Negro with a mountain to climb ahead of the return leg in midweek.

Alves, who was forced off with cramps in both legs, was expected to recover in time for the game against Atlético.

However, the 35-year-old has been left out of the squad for Saturday’s fixture.

According to Gazeta Esportiva, Flamengo officials insist he will be fit for the trip to São Paulo in midweek.

Souza will now be under pressure to atone for his costly mistake.

But new manager Rogério Ceni backed the Ninho do Urubu graduate to overcome the setback, describing him as “a great goalkeeper” whose “future is exceptional”.

League leaders Internacional suffered a 2-0 defeat at Santos on Saturday, giving both Atlético Mineiro and Flamengo the opportunity to overtake them.
