Flamengo will not defend their Copa Libertadores title after falling 5-3 on penalties following a second-straight 1-1 draw.

Racing will now play the winner of Boca Juniors and Internacional in the quarter-final stage. They have yet to begin their series due to the death of Diego Armando Maradona.

Racing’s Leonardo Sigali scored what appeared to be the only goal of the match in the 65th minute, immediately from the resulting free-kick after Rodrigo Caio was sent off after picking up his second yellow card of the match.

However, Willian Arão stunned the Flamengo faithful by heading home a corner kick in the third of six minutes of stoppage time to send the match straight to penalties.

Racing Club were first to shoot and made no mistake from the spot despite Diego Alves’ propensity for saving penalties, converting all five of their efforts from 12 yards.

Willian Arão would go from hero to zero in a matter of just minutes as his penalty in round four was the only kick that did not find the back of the net, with Gabriel Arias diving to his left to make a relatively easy save.

Flamengo were attempting to become the first back-to-back Copa Libertadores champions since Boca Juniors pulled off the feat in the 2000 and 2001 seasons.

River Plate and Santos also advanced to the Copa Libertadores quarter-final stage after knocking off Athletico-PR and LDU Quito, respectively.
