Flamengo president Rodolfo Landim reportedly blocked a Southampton move for right-back Matheuzinho.
According to Globo Esporte, the Premier League side made a €5m bid for the 21-year-old.
The report claims that the two clubs came close to a deal for the player before Landim intervened and prevented the transfer going forward.
It is understood that the Flamengo are interested in acquiring more of the player’s rights ahead of a potential bigger move down the line.
The Rubro-Negro bought Matheuzinho from Londrina in 2019, and his former club retain 50% of his economic rights.
While Matheuzinho stays put, Flamengo have allowed Lázaro to leave and link up with LaLiga side Almería.
The midfielder has joined the Spanish club until 2028 for a reported fee of €7m.
