Bayern Munich booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup with a 4-2 win over Flamengo in one of the games of the tournament.

The German champions were on top early on and put themselves in a strong position within the first 10 minutes. Joshua Kimmich’s dangerous corner forced Flamengo midfielder Erick Pulgar to head the ball into his own net to give Bayern the lead. Moments later, Harry Kane doubled Bayern’s lead in clinical fashion after the Brazilian outfit lost the ball in their own half.

Flamengo were desperate to find a way back into the game and their pressure paid off when Gerson’s emphatic volley found the roof of Manuel Neuer’s net to bring the score to 2-1. Despite this, Bayern regained their two-goal lead, as Leon Goretzka latched onto a poor clearance from winger Luiz Araújo, placing the ball into the bottom left corner.

In the second half, Flamengo found an early way back into the game, as Michael Olise handballed Giorgian De Arrascaeta’s cross in the box, giving Flamengo a penalty which Jorginho converted. Despite Flamengo’s efforts to get an equaliser, Bayern yet again scored the decisive goal, as Kimmich set up Kane in the box to curl the ball into the bottom left corner, giving them a 4-2 lead.

The fourth goal sealed the deal for die Bayern, who are set to play Paris Saint-Germain in a mouth-watering clash in the quarter-finals next Saturday.

As it happened

Bayern showed intent right from the start, testing Flamengo’s defence early on. Kimmich smashed a volley wide in the fifth minute after an error from Flamengo keeper Agustín Rossi.

The German side’s pressure paid off. In the sixth minute of the match and from their third corner attempt, Kimmich’s in-swinging corner was met by Flamengo midfielder Pulgar who, in an attempt to clear it, directed the ball into the corner of his own goal to give Bayern an early lead.

Flamengo tried to respond immediately after going behind. Quickly after the restart, right back Wesley broke away from Dayot Upamecano to find De Arrascaeta in the box, but he headed it over.

However, Bayern made the Brazilian side pay for their missed chances. In the 10th minute, Upamecano won the ball from De Arrascaeta outside Flamengo’s box and fed it to Kane, who hit a low-driven shot which came off the post into the bottom right corner. It was the Englishman’s 40th goal of the season, and it gave Bayern a two-goal cushion early on.

The deficit did not deter Flamengo from making their mark on the game. In the 14th minute, De Arrascaeta’s cross from the right-hand side deflected off Upamecano and found Araújo in the box, whose sliding shot forced a save from Neuer.

Araújo then came close to scoring in the 31st minute. The Brazilian flicked the ball over Bayern defender Josip Stanišić, but his shot went wide of Neuer’s goal.

Eventually, Flamengo’s relentless pressure paid off. In the 33rd minute, Araújo’s cross from the left found De Arrascaeta, who set up midfielder Gerson to reply with an emphatic volley into the roof of Neuer’s goal, giving them a route back into the game.

Bayern regained control of the game towards the end of the second half. Olise put in a cross from the right which Upamecano headed over and, in the 42nd minute, Araújo’s clearance in Flamengo’s box fell into the path of Goretzka, who steered the ball into the bottom corner, leaving Flamengo keeper Rossi rooted to the spot.

The goal was crucial for Bayern, who went into the half-time break with their two-goal lead restored.

In the second half, Flamengo continued the momentum they had shown when going behind. De Arrascaeta hit a volley over the bar five minutes into the half, giving a warning to Bayern’s defence.

In the 54th minute De Arrascaeta’s cross found the hand of Olise in the box, with the referee giving a penalty to the Brazilian side. This gave Jorginho the chance to bring Flamengo back into the game, and with his trademark penalty-hop style he slotted the ball past Neuer to bring the deficit back to one goal.

This ignited a fire in Flamengo’s players as they pushed for an equaliser. Léo Pereira sprayed a long pass to Bruno Henrique in the 68th minute, whose shot went wide of Neuer’s goal.

However, in similar fashion to the first half, Bayern punished Flamengo for their missed chances. In the 73rd minute, Araújo lost the ball to Konrad Laimer while trying to dribble out of his box. The Austrian international played a pass into Kimmich, who in turn found Kane. In prolific fashion, he then slotted the ball into the bottom corner for his second goal of the game.

Bayern nearly scored a fifth, as they broke away from a counter attack from a Flamengo set piece. Olise played a one-two with Jamal Musiala before losing control of the ball at the decisive moment. Moments later, Leroy Sané was put through one-on-one, hitting a shot straight at Rossi.

Bayern held out to win the game 4-2 and book their spot in the quarter-finals.
