FK Austria Wien have announced the signing of forward Maria Olsen from SCR Altach. The Danish international has penned a two-and-a-half-year deal and will join the Violets until the summer of 2027.
The 24-year-old started her football career in her native Denmark at Kolding IF, before making the move to the USA in 2020 at age 19, like many others to experience college football. Here, Olsen played for the Wildcats at the University of Kentucky, whilst simultaneously studying marketing.
After graduating, Olsen returned to her homeland and joined AGF Fodbold for six months. Following this short spell, she moved to Austria and signed for SCR Altach. In her first season, Olsen bagged 17 goals and eight assists in 23 Bundesliga matches. Despite a tough first half of the season with Altach, Olsen still provided two goals and four assists, all whilst wearing her distinctive white headband.
Following her transfer, Olsen said: “I am very happy to be moving to Austria Wien. It is a new challenge and a chance to develop further. I am motivated to do my best and contribute to the club’s success. My goal for this season is to enjoy, to have fun playing football again, and to grow as a player. Together, we want to try and continue to challenge St. Pölten and reach the top of the league.”
Sporting director Lisa Makas added: “Maria has been one of our absolute dream players for a long time and we are very happy that the transfer has now worked out. She has proven her footballing qualities several times in recent years and can pose problems for any defence in Austria with her creativity. Maria makes us even more versatile in attack and brings an additional variable to our game with her strength in set pieces”.
Austria Wien currently sit second in the Women’s Bundesliga, and are only two points off top team St. Pölten. Olsen will be eligible to make her debut for the Violets in a cup game clash against Neulengbach on February 2nd.
