Euro 2024 qualifying has almost wrapped up, with the vast majority of the spots filled for next summer’s tournament in Germany.

While the likes of England, France and Spain make their plans for next year, some big name players will be booking their holidays for the end of the season after their national teams couldn’t get the job done.

Here are some of the best Premier League players who we know will not be playing in the competition.

Erling Haaland – Norway

Even with the most lethal finisher in European football among their ranks, Norway could not qualify for the 24-team Euros. Having scored six goals during the campaign, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland was among the top goalscorers in qualifying, but results simply weren’t good enough.

Norway were not handed a particularly difficult group, with Scotland among the lowest-ranked nations to come out of Pot 2; Spain, Georgia and Cyprus made up the rest of Group A.

But they won just three of their eight games, with defeat to the Scots in June proving crucial. A 1-1 draw in Georgia in March didn’t help their prospects either.

Alexander Isak – Sweden

Injury prevented Alexander Isak from playing a major role in Sweden’s qualification campaign, appearing just three times. His national side haven’t seen the best of the Newcastle United forward lately, having scored just once in the last two years.

Sweden could barely lay a glove on Belgium and Austria, gaining just one point in their four meetings as they finished third – but last week’s 3-0 defeat to Azerbaijan was a complete disaster.

There won’t be a play-off spot for them in March – that went to Estonia for their performance in the Uefa Nations League, despite only picking a single point in qualifying and finishing bottom of Group F. Bonkers.

Evan Ferguson – Republic of Ireland

A young Ireland team were miles off the pace in qualifying, although they were handed as tough a group as you can get, as they were drawn with France, Netherlands, Greece and Gibraltar in Group B.

There is some hope for the future following Evan Ferguson’s breakthrough at Brighton. The 19-year-old striker scored twice in their Euro 2024 campaign, with both goals coming against Gibraltar. Worryingly, though, he appears to be picking up injuries a bit too regularly this season.

Martin Odegaard – Norway

Norway’s golden generation is meant to be coming of age, but if we’re honest their golden generation is literally just Haaland and Martin Odegaard.

It doesn’t hurt to have two of the best footballers in the Premier League on your side. Indeed, many semi-successful international teams punch above their weight because they have just one superstar who raises the ceiling for everyone.

Norway have two! But their talent level beyond them is paper thin. As classy as the Arsenal captain is, he can’t do it all by himself in midfield.

Dejan Kulusevski – Sweden

As good as Dejan Kulusevski has been for Tottenham over the past three seasons, the wide attacker will miss out on Euro 2024 after Sweden fell well short in qualifying.

The 23-year-old managed just one goal and two assists in eight appearances over the campaign, as the Swedes picked up just three wins.

The Blue and Yellow have seen talented young players coming through in recent years, but this is the second time in a row they will miss out on a major tournament.
