Five Things We Learned From Inter This Week: “Joaquin Correa – A Poor Piece Of Business So Far”

Inter performed the ultimate late late show on two occasions this week.

A smash and grab in the Coppa Italia at home to Empoli after extra time was coupled with Saturday night’s last minute win over a brave Venezia.

Here’s what we learned from a rather stressful week at times from Inter.

1) Stefano Sensi Back In The Fold?

An injury to Inter’s €33million sick note Joaquin Correa has brought about an unlikely opportunity for Stefano Sensi.

In from the cold and off the bench to score Inter’s winner in the Coppa in midweek, it all seems a very different picture now for a man looking like he was set for a loan to Sampdoria.

Since Tuesday evening, any deal to loan out the former Sassuolo man has been stopped and he is clearly around the squad to stay.

Can Sensi keep himself fit long enough to be of some use? Only time will tell.

2) Joaquin Correa – A Poor Piece Of Business So Far

Clearly bought on the recommendation of Simone Inzaghi and also in fairness due to him possessing outstanding technical ability when on form, Joaquin Correa’s time at Inter isn’t going to plan.

This latest injury will be his third setback since signing in August and even when he has been available, performances have been too inconsistent.

Now forced into paying €33million for a man they can’t keep fit, this seems a deal that Marotta and co actually got wrong.

Perhaps Marcus Thuram getting injured was a bad thing.

3) Poor Arturo Vidal

Early season promise made some of us hopeful of an Indian summer for Arturo Vidal.

How wrong we were.

Clumsy, ineffective in possession and at times appears simply as a walking yellow card, Vidal’s time playing in a top side in a top league is over.

The three central starting midfielders for Inter are excellent so to get back up for them that is content with bit part roles is tough, but an upgrade on Vidal come summer is a must.

4) Dynamic Denzel Dumfries

Sure he isn’t quite Achraf but my goodness is Denzel Dumfries starting to catch fire in an Inter shirt.

His phenomenal delivery created the winner on Saturday evening and it seems almost that now he must start ahead of Matteo Darmian when he’s available.

Pacy, direct, brave and full of power, Dumfries is a match for any left sided full back in the league.

It may have took a few games for him to settle in Italy but Dumfries is now showing to be a bargain replacement for the departed Hakimi.

5) Playing Poorly Yet Winning Is No Bad Thing

This week saw Inter’s first real slump of the season.

The loss to Lazio in October was simply a blot on the copy book due to poor officiating but this past week has seemed sloppy by Inter’s high standards.

The fringe players nearly blew Inter’s Coppa Italia campaign at home to Empoli which perhaps taught the manager a little about his back up players, which could turn out to be no bad thing.

However, a nearly full strength Inter had to battle hard to reverse Venezia’s lead on Saturday evening.

The key thing to takeaway however is that Inter picked up two wins which shows the current level of quality and mentality within the squad.

Not every week are we going to see Rolls Royce football in high scoring victories as the season is long for a side playing in Europe and domestic football.

Two last gasp wins in a week for Inter sees them into the next round of the Coppa and extend their lead at the top due to Spezia’s win over Milan on Monday evening.
