Five Things We Learned From Inter Milan This Week: “Nerazzurri Serie A Campaign At Risk Of Falling Apart”

Simone Inzaghi’s Inter succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at home to a resolute Juventus on Sunday evening.

A very controversial winner, scored by Filip Kostic, was at the forefront of the action as it seemed very clear that Adrien Rabiot had handled the ball in the build up.

That being said, Inter’s once again blunt attack saw them fall to a ninth league defeat of the campaign.

Following on from another set back, here are the five key talking points from all things Inter this week.

1) Denzel Dumfries Done Bad Again

Apart from some very poor work in the VAR room, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to hold Denzel Dumfries largely responsible for the winning goal on Sunday night.

The Dutchman inexplicably decided to abandon Serbian winger Kostic in some bizarre pursuit of blocking his shot before the ball had even reached his feet.

In doing so, the former PSV player ended up blocking the vision of his goalkeeper who was then left utterly helpless in his attempts to keep out the goal from Kostic.

You can forget the idea of selling Denzel Dumfries for €50million on this form. He simply is not cutting the mustard at the moment and may well find himself back up to a much more assured Matteo Darmian very soon.

2) Edin Dzeko Must Not Be Offered A New Deal

Whilst in most senses the big Bosnian has been an excellent signing since his arrival from Roma just under two years ago, given his age, he isn’t worth another deal.

With Dzeko turning 37 on Friday, it was another stark reminder of where Inter have now found themselves recruiting. In the aged and past their peak section.

Inter fielded a side on Sunday evening that contained five players that were over the age of 33 which is staggeringly smelling of short termism.

Whilst Dzeko will be remembered fondly and also it may not be a pure guarantee that Inter invest wisely in younger talent due to budgetary constraints, it is time for him to move on for a younger model.

3) Where Does Rom Go From Here?

Yes Romelu Lukaku scored the goal that has meant they will play in the last eight of the Champions League, but his future couldn’t be at more of a crossroads than it is right now.

The bruising Belgian has been a shadow of the player he was just less than two years ago and if reports are to be believed, it looks very unlikely that he will have any idea where he will be playing his football next year.

Niggly injuries, a poor World Cup and something of a Chelsea hangover have stopped Inter from seeing anywhere near the player that led them so valiantly to a Scudetto in 2020.

With him still having years left on his Chelsea deal and his reputation taking a really huge hit over the past two seasons, it is really hard to see where he ends up in the summer.

Would you keep him if a smart deal could be done? Let us know in the comments.

4) Benfica A Good Draw?

Bar maybe Chelsea, who do possess some excellent players it must be said, Benfica is perhaps the kindest draw Inter could have received in the Champions’ League last eight.

Avoiding the likes of red hot Napoli, current holders Real Madrid as well as the imperious duo of Erling Haaland’s Manchester City and Bayern Munich, means Inter have a strong opportunity to reach the last four.

Whilst the side in Benfica who have lost just once domestically this year boast the likes of Gonçalo Ramos and a rather certain Joao Mario in their ranks, Inter must feel they have a strong chance of facing either Milan or Napoli in the semi finals.

Having the benefit of a first leg at home too and recent experience of playing a Portuguese side gives the Nerazzuri a chance to make real history.

5) Serie A Season In Danger Of Falling Apart

Back to back defeats in league action sees Inter fretting over a top four spot.

With the race for European competition as tight as ever, the Nerazzuri simply cannot fail in their quest for top four even if it is from a solely financial standpoint.

With the Suning Group’s well documented inability to back the elite club, a failure to finish and qualify for Europe’s premier competition in the form of the Champions League could be well and truly disastrous.

With a rather tricky run after the international break which sees Inter face the Old Lady again in their quest to retain the Coppa Italia alongside games against an in form Fiorentina, they need to snap out of their current funk and fast.

Inter have never qualified for the Champions League after losing this many games at this stage of the season, let’s hope that this year is the year they can break that duck.

Especially if it means that Inter can actually afford to bring in players under the age of 33 in the summer mercato.

Do you agree? Or disagree? Would you try to sign Romelu Lukaku over next season? Do you think Benfica is a good draw for Inter?
