Qualification for the 2022 World Cup started in earnest this evening for some of Europe’s biggest nations.
Let’s see how they got on.
Scorers: Ward-Prowse 14′, Calvert-Lewin 21′ 53′, Sterling 31′, Watkins 83′
England eased their way past minnows San Marino as Dominic Calvert-Lewin impressed in a 4-0 win.
It was James Ward-Prowse who gave the Three Lions some early control here as the Southampton man finished well for his first senior international goal.
And it was soon two, as Calvert-Lewin headed in from close range after some excellent work by Reece James down the right-hand side before Raheem Sterling quickly added a third.
After the break Calvert-Lewin grabbed his second of the evening with a tap in while Ollie Watkins scored on his debut to cap a straightforward evening for the hosts.
Scorers: Goretzka 3′, Havertz 7′, Gundogan 56′
Germany got their World Cup qualification off to the perfect start as Iceland were dispatched 3-0.
Joachim Löw’s side got off to the perfect start as they scored twice inside the opening 10 minutes through Leon Goretzka and Kai Havertz.
Into the second half and Ilkay Gundogan, continuing his impressive club form, got on the scoresheet to take the score beyond the visitors.
Scorers: Morata 33′; Bakasetas (PEN) 57′
Spain stuttered in their opening World Cup qualifying clash as Greece came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with the hosts.
Spain impressed early on here against the Greeks and took the lead just after the half hour mark through Alvaro Morata.
Into the second half, and despite struggling all game, the away side were back on level terms as Bakasetas fired in a penalty.
Scorers: Berardi 14′, Immobile 39′
Italy’s fine run of recent form continued this evening as Northern Ireland were beaten 2-0 thanks to a pair of first half goals.
Roberto Mancini’s men flew out of the blocks and scored inside 15 minutes through Domenico Berardi and then doubled their lead thanks to Ciro Immobile.
The Azzurri took their foot off the gas in the second half but never looked anything other than comfortable winners.
